Due to #1 (headset catastrophe) I was forced to use my single speed commuter bike to train, which I aptly named Tyr (the Norse god of single-handed combat) about a year ago. Continuing the recent trend of catastrophes, I was unable to remove my toe-strap-equipped peddles from Tyr. I wrangled out my old Shimano SPD shoes – they had a decent amount of hard rubber on the bottom that would have worked well with with the straps – sucked it up, and went out for the early and slightly wet team ride. Proof:
Craig brought his camera on the ride, so it’s all clearly documented. Six of us (Craig, Robert, Preston, Kimbo, Tim, and myself) went out on the ride. For about 3 weeks at the end of September and the beginning of October, the riding scenery is absolutely gorgeous…as long as you can find it.
We ended up doing around 60 miles, which was the farthest I’ve ever felt compelled to ride on Tyr. Surprisingly, the hills weren’t that bad. Needless to say, it’s definitely something I’ll be doing more in Base 2 and Base 3. But now for more photos
Meet Tim, a future powerhouse of pain and suffering in the ECCC:
Due of some sweet hookups, we managed to get a large quantity of free owl pellet-sized Clif bars. Regard the hand of from the Holder (Robert) to the Malnourished (Me):
Since Craig was taking all of the photos, I decided to steal the camera from him for a little. Et Voila, two of the remaining Grad Student Veterans:
Since Natan is in the country, I wanted to stare into someone else’s eyes, and this is what I got…
No more single speed training for the next few weeks, now that the bike’s fixed.. I’ll be waiting until at least halfway through Base 2 to start that up again. Since this photographed ride, I happily managed to remove those god-awful toe-strap peddles and throw on an extra pair of clipless peddles, which has made life my life on my one single speed much easier.
Next up…Ted King????
